Of an impressive size, the kovsh was crafted in the 20th century by skilled Russian craftsmen.
The piece is decorated throughout with the cloisonné enamelling technique. This involves arranging fine metal wires in an interesting pattern, one later filled with a coloured enamel paste and fired. A plethora of flowing and swirling floral decoration is created on the body of the piece. A pastel colour palette is used where shades of pink, blue, orange and cream predominate. The handle is of an attention-grabbing design, with finger ridges allowing for the easy hold of the piece. The inside of the kovsh is silver gilt.
The front of the kovsh is enamel painted depicting a genre scene set in a woodland. A group of ladies dressed in everyday clothing is seen conversing with each other, while one of them is swinging a baby tightly wrapped in a blanket.
