This stunning antique Russian chandelier is unusual for its centre of blue porcelain, which contrasts beautifully with the surrounding gilt and glass.
This magnificent and exceptionally large green glass chandelier was made by the celebrated English firm F&C Osler for export to the Indian market.
The chandelier is wrought from parcel-gilt green glass, with the central stem carefully decorated in the so-called ‘Mughal style’. Rendered here in white, green, and gilt enamel, this Anglo-Indian decoration brings Eastern and Western styles together, and was especially popular amongst noble Indian families at the turn of the 20th century.
The chandelier features two tiers of branches, with each S-scrolled branch wrought from tubular facet-cut and parcel gilt green glass. The upper tier is comprised of five hurricane shades while the lower tier comprises twenty shades staggered at two levels, and each shade features ornate gilt detailing. The column of the chandelier culminates in an upper and lower corona, with each corona draped with faceted cut glass pendants and droplets.
